Getaboutable: Launching Niche Travel Marketplace Despite The Travel Ban
On September 3, 2020 Dr Yasmine Gray, the founder of Getaboutable.com, a social enterprise focused on improving travel and leisure options for people with disabilities, presented THE Accessible Travel Marketplace as the finalist of the Travel Startups Show & Tell hosted by Travel Massive LIVE.
The Fastest Growing Travel Segment
As Dr Gray mentions, 20% of population experience some type of disability themselves or within close family, which makes accessible travel one of the fastest growing segments in the travel industry. Getaboutable is aimed to empower people with mobility, vision, hearing and other disabilities to participate in travel and leisure activities with their families and friends.
To launch THE Accessible Travel Marketplace, Yasmine has partnered with the team of group travel software experts from YouLive To Travel. The YouLi platform became the tech foundation that allowed Getaboutable community members and partners promote their accessible destinations, real trips and virtual tours via the Getaboutable network. Now any tour operator, travel designer, or destination manager willing to position their company as accessible, can list experiences on the Getaboutable marketplace powered by YouLi, for free and promote them for a low fee of $39-$69/month.
Dr Yasmine Gray came from an academic background with the passion for travel and adventure and minimum business skills. She launched Getaboutable.com in 2016 as an educational resource. She then was successful in getting a number of grants from local government and philanthropies, met the technical co-founders, Andrew Vassili and Steven Diep, and revamped the website. Their work together gives people with a disability the confidence to get out and about in the community by increasing accessibility information.
Finding The Right Tech Partner
During the travel ban in spring of 2020, Dr Gray joined one of the community meetups hosted by Jennifer Fein, the co-founder and CEO of YouLive To Travel, and offered partnership on the project.
